October 1st kicks off a month of awareness on Vegetarianism and its undeniable benefits. Founded by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977 and supported by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978—World Vegetarian Day was born.

What is World Vegetarian Day?

World Vegetarian day (WVD) is all about promoting vegetarianism and raising awareness about the unequivocal benefits a vegetarian diet has on our planet and health.

Since the idea of Checkout Superstore came into conceptualisation, we have adhered to a singular goal—serve the diverse and multicultural people of Slough. We provide products catering to a wide range of culinary diets and support those who choose a vegetarian lifestyle. Stop by Checkout Superstore and pick some of our fresh produce to serve your family a vegetarian meal tonight in support of WVD.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint

With consequences from climate change and the habits of humankind leading to disastrous outcomes, WVD is needed now more than ever before. WVD not only promotes vegetarianism, but it also advocates for living an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. One of the best ways that can be done is by consuming produce in-season sourced from local farmers.

How does consuming in-season locally sourced fruits and vegetables benefit our planet? It’s simple really, the fresher the produce, the better for our health and planet. The less amount of time it takes from the moment the fruit or vegetable was picked, to when it is served on your dinner plate, equals to a decreased amount of preservatives and pesticides used to keep produce fresh. Consumption of in-season locally sourced produce minimises our part in pumping our Earth, bodies and its natural resources with synthetic chemicals. It’s also easier on the wallet as it requires less effort in order to keep it fresh, hence, lower prices on in-season produce.

As autumn is upon us, some of the decadent fruits and vegetables that our in-season are:

  • Figs
  • Pears
  • Pumpkins
  • Plums
  • Leeks
  • Mushrooms

You can find all the above at Checkout Superstore, and it goes without saying where possible, we source locally. Although some of these fruits and vegetables can be found year-round like leeks and mushrooms, overall, they are at their tastiest when in-season. The same goes for all produce. Shopping in-season comes with an immeasurable amount of benefits.

Checkout Superstore strives to take part in building a prosperous future for upcoming generations. We hope to continue to play our role in supporting those that advocate for reducing our carbon footprint on Mother Nature.
